Second Doha of Hanuman Chalisa Explained
The second doha is all about meditation through surrendering to the power and energy of Hanumanji. Recognising that we actually don't know as much as we think. We ask for strength and intelligence to absorb, understand and apply (spiritual) knowledge. All this is only possible with a clean body and mind.

In scriptures of Sanatan Dharma you will find a lot of metaphors. In this article we will explain the context for the Second Doha and the spiritual meaning behind it.
Intro Doha second Couplet | |
---|---|
Buddhi Heen Tanu Jaanike | | Knowing myself to be ignorant |
Sumiro Pavan Kumaar | | I remember the son of Pavan Kumaar |
Bal Buddhi Vidya Dehu Mohi | | Give me strenght, intellegence and knowledge |
Harahu Kales Vikaar | Take away all the impurity and sickness |
Fist line
Buddhi Heen Tanu Jaanike | | Knowing myself to be ignorant |
---|
Buddhi Heen Tanu Jaanike |
Reading out the first verse of the second doha, often people get confused with the word 'Tanu'. Reading this line people think 'Tanu' stands for 'you'. I will tell you that it is incorrect. Hanuman Chalisa is written in Devanagri with words that are matching Sanskrit. Tanu means: 'weakened'. The first verse starts with the knowledge that we don't know as much as we think. Acknowledging our weakened intelligence.
Buddhi = Intelligence
Heen = less, smaller, inferior
Tanu = weakened
Jaanike = understood

Sumiro Pavan Kumaar | | I remember the son of Pavan Kumaar |

Sumiro Pavan Kumaar |
Pavan (vayu) the God of the winds has played an important role in the life of Maruti (Hanumanji). Pavan is known to be the godfather and protector of Maruti. With the respect Pavan has among the Gods, Maruti was brought back to life after he was hit by the thunderbolt of Indra. Soon we will indulge in this beautiful history on our website. Stay tuned!
Sumiro = means remembering, and thinking of..
Paavan = Paavan, also known as Vayu and Vata. The Godfather and protector of Hanuman.
Kumar = Kumar means boy and/or son
Pavan Kumar stand for Maruti, the Godchild of Pavan. With this verse we remember him and call out to him.
Bal Buddhi Vidya Dehu Mohi | | Give me strenght, intellegence and knowledge |
---|
Bal Buddhi Vidya Dehu Mohi |
With this line we ask power and intelligence to receive all the divine knowledge, to understand it and to be able to apply it on our daily life.
Bal = Power
Buddhi = Intelligence
Vidya = Knowledge
Dehu = Give
mohi = Me
It is not a given situation that receiving knowledge results in being able to understand it and having the power to apply it in our daily life. So we specifically ask for power and intelligence to receive, understand and apply.
Harahu Kales Vikaar | Take away all the impurity and sickness |
---|---|
Harahu Kales Vikaar
Spiritually seen 'Kalesh' stands for a state of mind where the mind of a person is clouded (imbalanced) which negativeley influences the actions of a person. Impurities of the mind such as thoughts that can influence the spirit of the mind. Think about fear, anger and sadness. In Ayurved 'Vikaar' stands for a disease/disorder. Spiritually this is linked to attachments, ego, lust etc..
Harahu = take away
Kalesh = impurities
Vikaar = disease/disorders
This verse starts with the word Harahu. With this last line of the second doha of Hanuman Chalisa we meditate to take away all the kalesh and vikaar, so our body, mind and spirit gets clean, and we can meditate with the energie that belongs to Hanumanji.
