STRAW | Netflix movie review

Sometimes a film doesn't just tell a story, it hits you. That's exactly what STRAW (2025) does. Directed and Written by Tyler Perry, starring Tara P. Hensen, Sherri Shepherd and Teyana Taylor. STRAW is a hauntingly powerful exploration of identity, struggle and sisterhood. it's a film that doesn't shy away from uncomfortable truths, and for that reason alone, it demands to be seen.

I give STRAW a solid ★★★★☆ (4 out of 5 stars), and here's why.

TARA P. Henson - A Force of Nature

Tara delivers yet another phenomenal performance, embodying the life of a single woman of color with realism that it feels less like acting and more like witnessing. This character - Often invisible in mainstream storytelling and our every day life - is brought front and center, with Tara shining a light on the complexities, heartbreaks, and quiet loses that come with simply existing in this world. Her portrayal is brave, vulnerable, and deeply human. You can slowly see her become one with the character from beginning to end.

Sherri Shepherd - A Quiet Power

Sherri Shepherd steps into a very different but equally important role: the woman who seems to have it all - the career, the family, the 'ideal' life. We all have this ideal to help our fellow people when we reach the top. But what will you do when you eventually are at the top and are confronted with the real struggles your people are facing. Situations that can break your perfect family. Will you choose to run from difficult situations in fear of losing it all, or actually stay and deal with it to make a slightly difference.  Sherri strikes the perfect balance of empathy, fear, understanding, and love. She did a wonderful job in her supporting role!

Teyana Taylor - A Suprising Standout

Teyana Taylor plays an officer who forges a deep, emotional connection with the main character through trauma bounding. Her role adds a gripping dynamic to the story - one that speaks to the unspoken pain many carry behind the badge. Teyana brings the perfect mix of guarded strength and emotional depth, offering a impactful performance in the film.

The Story: Imperfect but Important

While STRAW is driven by powerful performances, and a good theme, the writing does stumble in places. Some scenes feel underwritten or slightly rushed, and a few moments could have used more polish. But here's the thing - those flaws fade into the background once the climax hits.

The final act is nothing short of devastating. It's jaw- and heart dropping, in a second it took a heart wrenching turn that had me sitting in stunned silence long after the credit rolled. It's rare for a film to leave such a lasting emotional mark, but STRAW does exactly that.

Final Thoughts

STRAW speaks to the strength of Black women, the complexity of their relationships, and the brutal reality of what it means to survive in a world that often refuses to see them. Despite a few imperfections in the script, the emotional weight and powerhouse performances make this film a must-watch.

If you are looking for a story that will move you, challenge you, and leave a lasting impression: STRAW it is!

My rating 4 out of 5 stars ★★★★☆

Still feeling the ache in my chest from that ending.. and honestly, that's how I know it was worth watching.
